Abstract
In the earliest days of the World Wide Web, Web servers were well-connected to the Internet but not to the main information systems used by companies to operate their businesses. That is no longer the case. Web-oriented e-business systems do not stand by themselves. They connect with, feed and are fed by many other software applications in the enterprise. Increasingly, Web systems are also the points of contact with the outside world. Supply chain, distribution chain, portals, exchanges and direct customers all come together to access enterprise systems through the Web.
