Abstract
Despite the enormous growth in the use of SAP R/3 as a tool to standardise IT systems and business processes, not all organisations embarking on its implementation have perceived their targeted results. However, the extent to which standardisation with SAP R/3 can be effective is highly determined by the approach followed in its implementation and integration with other business majors. This paper discusses a proposed model presenting the implementation of SAP R/3 from a holistic view. The model is developed based on reported experiences of a number of leading practice organisations. The central argument of the paper maintains that at the heart of effective SAP R/3 implementation, a fully integrative perspective has to be adopted. Conversely, the narrow focus on technical elements, at the cost of social and organisational components, has proved to be a major cause of failure.
