There are signs of an increased interest in standards education and research in higher education in North America and Europe. Correspondingly there is evidence of increased collaboration facilitated by the increasingly important use of the Internet in research and education. If this growth is to be sustained, the standards community needs to think and act more strategically with respect to outreach, education and research.
