Abstract
Fifty years ago, the USA was the leading industrial nation. Their firms neither considered foreign competition nor did they have to be more efficient, cheaper and quicker than outside competitors. They faced a constant economy regarding cost of capital, regulation and technological challenge. Only large scale production of standardized goods to satisfy the nation’s demand was important.
