Not a Duplicated Effort

You have to remember one of the major reasons for the fork. As a community member as opposed to beng an employee of Sun/Oracle if you had a patch or code enhancement you could not just submit it and expect anything to happen. The reality was you had to find an employee of Sun/Oracle and have them champion your submission to see it go anywhere. Otherwise it could languish there for years without making any progress.

Between the restrictive licence, Oracle's "Talk to the hand" attitude toward the community and their treatment of Solaris and how Open Office could be treated the same way. The community had to move on and fork the project.

Just remember there is no duplication of effort becase 98% of what is going on at LibreOffice would not have made it into OpenOffice.
