Abstract: The development of a new technology for the consumer market brings in multiple concerns. Those behind the technology must decide whether to make and sell products themselves or whether to align with other companies so that they may produce similar and complementary products. Neither of these strategies, however, guarantees that the technology will be adopted by consumers. If similar technologies already exist in the marketplace, consumers may be hesitant to adopt the new, especially if companies cannot assure consumers that the technology will not be a fad.
