Overview: Automatic Meter Reading (Demand Side Management) requires universal definitions and communication standards. DLMS/COSEM is the language for communicative compatibility comprised of: Device Language Message Specification (DLMS), a generalized concept for abstract modelling of communication entities, and COmpanion Specification for Energy Metering (COSEM), which sets the rules for data exchange with energy meters. Since 2002, the Device Langauge Message Specification (DLMS) User Association has maintained a liaison with IEC TC13 WG14, the standardization body responsible for establishing standards for electricity meter data exchange. The User Association provides registration and maintenance services for the IEC 62056 DLMS/COSEM standards suite and performs pre-standardization work. In addition, the DLMS UA operates the conformance testing pre-standardization scheme. The DLMS/COSEM standard suite (IEC 62056/EN 13757-1) is the most widely accepted international standard for utility meter data exchange. With the steady addition of new members, there has been an increase in the number of meter types certified to be DLMS/COSEM compliant.
