Overview: SportsML is an XML schema created to facilitate the interchange of sports data by enabling the exchange of sports scores, schedules, standings, and statistics for a wide variety of competitions. SportsML (the organization) cooperates with current International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards NewsML and NITF to enable publishers to package sports statistics alongside edited coverage of sports. SportsML uses XML to define the content and structure of sports data, so that developers of interactive or printed sports data services can integrate sports feeds that adhere to SportsML. Some of SportsML's features include: the ability to address scores, schedules, standings and statistics; international scope and design; the ability to provide a common framework for all sports; and the availability of plug-in modules for specific sports. SportsML was developed under the auspices of the IPTC, an independent international association of news agencies and publishers.
