Consortium Of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors (COAST)
Overview: The Consortium Of Anti-Spyware Technology vendors (COAST) created a forum in which members could collaborate on projects designed to increase awareness of issues involving spyware on the Internet. Consortium projects included: consumer education outreach programs on spyware and related online privacy issues; a program to encourage software developers to create products that meet currently-accepted privacy standards; publication of research addressing the question "What is spyware?" and quantifying the magnitude of the problem; and creation of a spyware-free certification program for software vendors. COAST was developing a Spyware Free Certification for this purpose. Membership was open to software developers who worked with the Consortium to correct any of the guideline practices within given timeframes, and had an ongoing commitment to abide by the COAST principles. COAST fell apart in 2005.
