Overview: ISO/IEC JTC1 (an acronym for "Joint Technical Committee 1") was formed by global standards organizations ISO and IEC to develop, maintain, promote and facilitate IT standards in the areas of design and development of IT systems and tools; performance and quality of IT products and systems; security of IT systems and information; portability of application programs; interoperability of IT products and systems; unified tools and environments; IT vocabulary; and user interfaces. The organization deals with various sectors of the information technology industry including specifications, and the design and development of systems and tools dealing with the capture, representation, processing, security, transfer, interchange, presentation, management, organization, storage and retrieval of information. Long term goals of the JTC 1 include establishing a systematic, ongoing technology watch component, the purpose of which is to identify, at an early stage, technological trends and the impact standardization may have in those. The American National Standards Institute acts as the Secretariat of JTC1.
