Overview: The Virtual Private Network Consortium (VPNC) acts as a trade association to support the VPN vendor community. Founded in 1999, the primary purposes of the VPNC are to: promote the products of its members to the press and to potential customers; increase interoperability between member products; serve as a discussion forum for VPN manufacturers and service providers throughout the world; help the press and potential customers understand VPN technologies and standards; and provide publicity and support for interoperability testing events. VPNC does not itself create standards, but does support current and future IETF standards. Membership in VPNC is limited to companies in the VPN market, including hardware manufacturers, software manufacturers, and service providers of the protocols supported as VPNs by VPNC: IPsec, L2TP under IPsec, SSL-based VPNs, and MPLS-based VPNs.
