Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)

Overview: The purpose of the Metro Ethernet Forum is to accelerate the adoption of optical Ethernet as the technology of choice in metro networks. The Forum has multiple objectives. These include uniting service providers, equipment vendors and end customers on Ethernet service definition, technical specifications and interoperability; and facilitating implementation of existing and new standards, the Ethernet service definition, test procedures and technical specifications of the MEF. Additional Forum goals are delivering Ethernet services to consumers; making Ethernet-based metro networks carrier-class; and enhancing awareness of the benefits of Ethernet services and Ethernet-based metro transport networks. MEF also creates implementation agreements that leverage existing standards by organizations such as the IETF and the IEEE, and creates new standards if other organizations fail to do so.
