Overview: The Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) was founded by several health care associations in 1983, initially to develop a standard for data transfer using uniform bar code labeling. Its function now is to facilitate electronic communications by developing standards for information exchange among health care trading partners. HIBCC has been involved in areas such as electronic data interchange message formats, universal numbering systems, and the provision of databases which assure common identifiers. HIBCC's current activities focus on standardized manufacturer, customer, and product identification codes, Computerized EDI protocols in ASC X12 approved message formats, and participation in national and international organizations working with electronic communications standards.
