Overview: CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, was established in 1973 and is officially recognized as the European Standards Organisation in its field by the European Commission through Directive 83/189/EEC. CENELEC works with 35,000 technical experts from 22 European countries (as of April 2003) to publish standards for the European market. It also collaborates closely with the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) to expedite the publication and common adoption of International Standards, ensure rational use of available resources, and accelerate the standards preparation process in response to market demands.
