Overview: The members of the Open Card Consortium (OCC) seek to capitalize on the combination of mobility and security which can allow smart cards to play an increasingly important role in the rapidly developing areas of electronic commerce and online information services. OCC takes a network-centric view of computing where resources are located throughout the network and access to them is ubiquitous. OCC also focuses on the importance of authenticated access and secure transactions as indispensable prerequisites for the secure functioning and continued growth of on-line activities. The OpenCard Framework (OFC) created by OCC provides a Java API to access both to smart card readers and to the applications embedded on the smart cards. The work ended with version 1.2 of the specification and a reference implementation by IBM. The consortium split up and left the OpenCard Framework in a dormant state. The website was still available until 2007 and is now shut down. The original code was transfered the a project on SourceForge, but never actively maintained.
