Open eBook Forum (OeBF)

Overview: The Open eBook Forum (OeBF) sought to foster the development of applications and products that benefited creators of content, makers of reading systems, and consumers. Its activities included: providing a forum for the discussion of issues and technologies related to electronic books; developing, publishing, maintaining, and promoting adoption of common specifications relating to electronic books; promoting industry-wide participation in electronic publishing through training sessions, guidelines, and demonstrations of proven technology; evaluating and recommending standards created by other bodies related to electronic books; encouraging implementations of interoperable electronic book related systems and providing a forum for resolution of interoperability issues; and accommodating differences in language, culture, reading and learning styles, and individual abilities. The Open eBook Forum defined Open eBook, an open ereader format that was based in HTML and XML and was the legacy ebook fomat that preceeded EPUB, which was standardized in 2007 by IDPF. *Now the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF)
