Overview: Within the United Nations, UN/CEFACT (Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) is located in the Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE), which is part of the United Nations network of regional commissions. UN/CEFACT's mission is to contribute to the growth of global commerce by improving the ability of business, trade and administrative organizations, from developed, developing and transitional economies, to exchange products and relevant services effectively. Besides expanding global commerce, its goals include: reducing bureaucracy and increasing transparency; creating better data flows through electronic commerce; lowering transaction costs; developing a network of supporting institutions; and improving private and public sector management. Participation in UN/CEFACT is open to Member States, intergovernmental organizations, and sectoral and industry associations recognized by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
